The cleanliness of the heart is the key to peace. We claim to be at peace, but we are not! Because the criteria for peace, we don’t even come close to it. And that criteria is the cleanliness of the heart. Tell me, whose hearts still hold the piercing thorns of the past? Time and again, you will remember things, like what uncle did at a certain time, or what someone said. This self (nafs) and Iblis, they are not so sympathetic as to pat you on the back and encourage you to be a good person. Being good, following the difficult path – if it were easy, why would we be lamenting today? Why would we be in turmoil?
